ETCHING

Etching is an engraving technique in which the design is ‚bitten‘ into copper or zinc plate with acid.

This method involves coating the plate to be used with a varnish, which is acid-resistant. After spreading the compound evenly over the plate with a roller it is smoked or blackened with soot to make it easier to see the design, which is then lightly drawn, cutting through the ground and exposing the plate underneath. The metal exposed is etched by the application of acid producing the characteristic ‚furry‘ appearance which distinguishes the lines from those produced in line engraving. Proofs are taken from time to time to enable the artist to gauge the effect of his work.
