WOODCUT

The technique for making prints with woodcuts was invented during the 15th century. In this method the design is drawn on a flat surface of a plank of wood, the unwanted background being cut away with a knife or gouge. The
'relief' portions of the block are then inked and paper applied under pressure against the block, leaving the impression of the design on the paper.

In general, printing from woodblocks give a bold, simple, black and white finish which can show little subtlety, shading or gradation of tone. Blocks, however, can be used for many years, though with use the design gradually loses its first clarity and boldness. In the case of wooden gravings the design is cut into the hard end-grain of the wood instead of into the softer surface of a plank and this gives a finer and more lasting base.
